my style is by visting first amazon.com. you can check nice books there based from it's ratings and user comments. then check the table of contents. last is the price. then go drop by at the bookstore, should at least have 2-3 books in mind... last option is by order online.
if any books suggested, better check the user comments first...

The book that i used 4 years ago was Beginning PHP 4 from wrox it ws pretty good but i didn't even finish reading it because i usually use google to search for specific things that i wanted to do. try looking for books that focus on PHP + MySQL since most web dev consist of data integration. Also, try looking for PHP with a bit of javascript.. you'll need this when you want to be a serious web dev in the future.
