I've been playing with PHP lately and I found this great installation bundle of MySQl, PHP and Perl really great piece of software.

Many people know from their own experience that it's not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl.

XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.

At the moment there are four XAMPP distributions:

* XAMPP for Linux

The distribution for Linux systems (tested for SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian) contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, gdbm, zlib, expat, Sablotron, libxml, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class, ncurses, mod_perl, FreeTDS, gettext, mcrypt, mhash, eAccelerator, SQLite and IMAP C-Client.

* XAMPP for Windows

The distribution for Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP. This version contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP + PEAR, Perl, mod_php, mod_perl, mod_ssl, OpenSSL, phpMyAdmin, Webalizer, Mercury Mail Transport System for Win32 and NetWare Systems v3.32, JpGraph, FileZilla FTP Server, mcrypt, eAccelerator, SQLite, and WEB-DAV + mod_auth_mysql.

* XAMPP for Mac OS X

The distribution for Mac OS X contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, SQLite, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, zlib, Ming, Webalizer, mod_perl, eAccelerator, phpSQLiteAdmin.

WARNING: This version of XAMPP is still in the first steps of development. Use at you own risk!

* XAMPP for Solaris

The distribution for Solaris (developed and tested with Solaris 8, tested with Solaris 9) contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, zlib, expat, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class.

WARNING: This version of XAMPP is still in the first steps of development. Use at you own risk!

I've been using XAMPP when I was still beginning to learn PHP & mySQL, but after sometime, I realized that whenever it is started, my PC slows down... then I found another package called easyPHP... The stuff included are a bit "outdated" though, but still... it works for me. :)

Even after knowing these tools... I still go for manual installation... I dunno why... I just seem to enjoy doing everything myself. :)

me too; i prefer manual setup. of course XAMPP is for those who wish to avoid manual setup and have everything working out of the install, right?

Yup, these packages are great for beginners who doesn't want to experience the hassle of manual setup... that includes me. :) But of course, it would be more advantageous if you know how to set it up yourself right? :)

Nice! haven't seen this one before.. looks really really good!

btw, i do love manual installs.. but somethimes you want something that you could quickly use and not worry about the underlying details(servers, db, configs).. i think this is the same reason why this bundles are built.

in my case, i prefer manual instalation of php. this case you know well how your php works and you can also get a view of your php and server configuration. since there are lots of modules or packages you might want to install later on. like cURL.

xammp and wamp are great, dito ako natuto, pero actually, di ko lam mag configure ng manual nung nag release ng php5 and apache 2.2.x,, kaya nagtyatyaga ako dito sa wamp and xammp

i do use xampp .. yeah its true. na it slows down the booting process of the computer.. i did the manaul installation of apache and php.. but i always get a problem connection to my MySql.. dont know y.. am just a noob

I learned PHP and MySQL when it was in versions 4 and 3.23 respectively. Back in those days you do the server, install the tools and sometimes compile from source. I never bothered looking into these packages. I prefer being in control of every aspect of the installation as much as possible.

Yeah, I do use XAMMP for learning PHP and MySQL purposes. Highly recommended for newbies in PHP and MySQL.

Have you ever heard of "Mobile Server"? Well, I could be done with XAMMP by just extracting it to your flash hard drive / mobile disk. Cool! Right?!!

i do use xampp and wamp sa vista kasi di ko mapagana ung apache sa vista he he he kakainis... way back nung xp pa gamit ko i do manually configure php/mysql/apache.

If you're looking for free ones, I can't suggest any -- but you can search "free web hosting" in google and hundreds wiil show up. You should find one that offers php / mySQL support if you plan to use php / mySQL (obviously). Once you got one, upload all your web files there, create your databases etc... :D
