The Kinds Of Pinoy Programmer

Another 2nd college years (from different school), All of my buddies are computer science courses or IT. If they are 100, 50 of them works as an machine operator on some semiconductor company, 25 is a nurse, 5 who didn’t graduated, 2 convicted, 6 is missing (Kung nasa abroad man kayo, paki-petition na lang ako), 2 are taking master’s degree, and only 10 is a successful programmer. And now… I am having a drink with this 10.

Tuesday night on my room… only my best buddy and me who is still awake and the others are having a good sleep.  After having a drink with my buddy… I went to a conversation about the kinds of programmers from different areas of specialty and field of work based on our tons of friends who work as developers. So it came up to an article. Read along –

·          The Elite / MVP (Most Valuable Programmer) – They are the best. The last line of defense when the critical-dead line of a project must be done. They are the untouchable. If you are 10 on the group, he done almost 70% of the job. He is much better than your team leader, best than the seniors. The right man for the job. Even though in personal life, he got the style.

·          The Copy-Paste Programmer – These individual proves that the google serves us well especially on our careers. He can give you solution in less than a minute with a variety of more than 20 selections. We called it “The Search Engine Professionals.” They are the experts in browsing the web. Copy the code, paste the code, edit the code, and compile the code.

·          Undercover Programmer – Free MP3(s), music video, hentai access codes, etc… name it! They got it all! Spending more time in their cubicles searching for free downloadable music for his MP3 player. Half of his working time setting up a bot on Ragnarok Online. Inviting friends on friendster or perhaps, muting the speaker so that the sound of the “Bang Bus” wouldn’t be heard.  Spend more time seeking for the light than coding. But take note, these guys can surely give you anything you need when the demon inside you whispers.

·          The “Lord Of Codes” – These multi-talented developers are inhabited on the so-called “crisis” here in the Philippines. They are also experts in software marketing. From selling codes to client trading. They earned the unimaginable. They are the big time.  They don’t need plaques or awards. They are well armed and aiming for the gold!

·          The Remora – In ecology subject way back on our high school days… the remora is the fish that stays and eats the leftover of the shark. These programmers are very similar to the remora, they are earning as much as you do. But believe it or not, they spent almost a year on the company without enough knowledge on programming aspect. In a team, he is the worst in coding. He lets the other do the job. He is visible to the eye and yet invisible when it comes to presence of team developing.

·          The Unleashed – This person is not a programmer or a developer. These people are not working on an IT-related job neither. But they have the talent. They are the undiscovered. The forbidden. They are one of the victims of misfortune events. They are not qualified technically but when it comes to skill and talent… they are one that morpheus and trinity is looking for.

·          The Sons of Blaise Pascal – They are good as the The Elite. They are also the best. They are the geeks. Spending more time in front of the computer screen than sleeping. They are workaholics. They are active in forums and online communities. They take their job at home. They see their job as an Obra Maestra where computer programming is their art. They are the nerds.

·          The Back Street Boys – These guys are the one who is taking advantage of their looks and achieved education. They are partially good. These are the people you can see at the café near the office. They have the good interpersonal skill rather than coding skills. They have the quickest promotion due to their “pa-cuteness” and boss-to-employee relations. They are friendly. They are the ones to be seen most by our bosses. Where the competition at the company is not on programming performance anymore.

·          The Oldies But Goodies Programmer – These veterans are well known for the witnesses of the computer evolution. From 3.1 to Vista, lotus to excel, VB1 to VBNET, monkey to human. They are the “Kuya” among the group. They work hard for their family. They are very supportive. They separate boys from men. They earn respect due to their ancient knowledge.

Anyways, the idea is based on Pinoy-cultured programmers. You...? What kind of programmer are you?

For the sake of completeness, here’s my vocabulary for the day and lessons I’ve learned.

Lesson I’ve learned:

·          Don’t drink too much cause it will give you headache. Try to be the best on your job. The issue on the complexity of a programmer is must.

Vocabulary

·          Call Center Representative (Kol senter re-pre-sentatib) – A new-age job that populates Makati and Ortigas. A high-salary work where your job is to talk with foreigners where you are strictly prohibited to say that you are a Filipino. A kind of a job where your English will be polished!!!

·          Hentai (Hentay)  - Cartoon movie where kids are not allowed to watch.

o         Where to find? – Tutuban Mall, Avenida, and other pirated-cd stall owned by Muslims.

o         When to find? – As long as you are 18 above.

o         Why to find? – Scratch it. You’ll know it.

·          Vista (Bista) – The new release of Microsoft Windows Operating System after Windows XP.

·          Google (gu-gel) – A web browser that is famous for multilingual support. Tagalog is available at google. Mortal na kaaway ng Yahoo na kalaban naman ng MSN.

·          Friendster (Prenster) – Ahh… hmm… ano ulit…? Ahh… A collection of friends online.

·          Paki-petition (Paki-petisyon)A long method of instant naturalization of citizenship. Where the remote person will file some kind of documents saying that “7 na taon nalang, susunod ka na sa America”

hey i don't think it's bad to be a cut-and-paste programmer by your definition... :) as long as you learn from the code you cut-and-paste so that by next time you don't have to do it, that's great.

it's good we have these tools nowadays...especially the Internet...and google!

lols... I guess Im am one of the Sons of Blaise Pascal and my mom is Lady Ada but sometimes I practice copy-and-paste-modify-run also.

I think its obvious who are The Oldies But Goodies Programmers here at devpinoy ;)

Me too, I do copy-paste. Cruizer is right, once you learn it, you won't do it next time. And I call it learning.

As for me, I think I belong to the "Undercover". Hey Hey Hey, don't ask me for a free access code ha. ;)

What? DOS 6.2 is already considered oldies?

I started using DOS 2.0 way back in 1991 when I was struggling to learn computer programming...thinking about it, that's more than a decade already...at least I was there in the introduction of Win16, and when it has been obsoleted by Win32, and now comes the new age of Windows 64-bit...

I still own 80286 at home, if I dare plug it in, I think it still going to work...

Hey, but I'm still young at heart :)

madaya ka vin. nagtatago ng edad. oldies but goodies ka din dapat. masyadong obvious para sa isang low-level programmer (C++). he he he.

@Cruizer,
That can be done, I was 11 years old when I was learning programming :)

>> using BASIC. 1987 pa yun...so guess kung ilang taon na ako, hehheh

Hey! Im not hiding my age. Actually I am 24. C/C++ is old language, but it doesn't mean that I've done programming long time ago. I began learning C when I was in 2nd yr high school. Besides, I spend more time playing games rather than programming. :) Talk about warcraft.

It's a good thing i'm only 23 :P

I used to be an undercover programmer back in college.. supplying my college profs with 'BAD GOODIES'.. but that was a long forgotten past now :)... i guess i have transformed into  a 'The Sons of Blaise Pascal' but i consider myself the nerdy type with a little bit of a sporty touch between my ears.

Ei! we should include pictures in our avatars so that we could have an idea on how old you uys are :P Cheers!

Hey [Been], are you trying to vie for being the box-office hitter because of this post! Hahaha.. Nice pre ;)

I've been the MVP for my previous project (and a one-man team, sad to say). Pro generally, cguro I can classify myself as a 'One of the sons of Blaise Pascal', nerdy type inside, prefers to talk with my computer (and my laptop), though I still have time to do some things not bounded by a computer.

@keith, with those dragonball x, can't forget that huh? hehehe :D

@cruizer, you're right pre! Sometimes, we have to consult mr. google, making it being copy-and-paste programmers not bad at all. It will turn out bad if you copied, pasted, made it work but never understood the whole process.

@misterclay, hahaha! nah.. those days are gone :) i think i was the person who introduced you and feb to the so-called 'limelight' back when we were in college... (remember the pupwebsite days?) aheheh!

<pre>Google (gu-gel) – A web browser that is famous for multilingual support. Tagalog is available at google. Mortal na kaaway ng Yahoo na kalaban naman ng MSN
</pre>

Correction, i think google is a search engine, web browsers are IE, Firefox, Opera...

though, <i>...mortal na kaaway ng yahoo at msn</i> is a much appropriate  definition

About the copy-and-paste thing.. Its fine with me... for the reason of being efficient programmer. Why do you have to think of something new to you but old to others? Anyway I'm sure pinoy can always have his answer when programming. But the point is, how soon you can deliver?

The best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system.
