DevConversations Episode 4: Jammin' with Jared Odulio with a cup of Java

This started as a friendly call just to say hi to person i consider a guru when it comes to java... it quickly turned into a full-blown-powerpacked-hardhitting-knowledgedfilled interview about the future and the technologies we live with.

Jared Odulio has been a fixture in the Filipino community for many years now and has been actively advocating the use of opensource in enterprise applications. In this interview, jared talks about why he prefers java over other programming language. His thoughts about TDD (Test-Driven Development). Why they spent $5000 on a testing tool called JProbe. Why he prefers eclipse over the netbeans. The java frameworks that he use and whats the advantage of

WebWorks over Struts. Why touchtyping is an important skill in programming. Why some managers cant figure out why their IT projects fail. On the Build vs. Buy principle.

Thoughts on where the Filipinos are right now in terms of IT compared to our conunterparts in the world. Why developers are scared of the console and learning how to use the console is important. Why knowing SQl is a must-have skill. His tips to people who are moving from Manila to Singapore and the things that they need to know first when you move to a new country.

One of the intriguing thoughts that he talked about is why he thinks Java has an edge over Microsoft Technologies. His fearless prediction that in two years Java would eventually overtake .Net as the primary tool for development.

btw., The interview includes some thoughts from Melvin Dave Vivas with his striking comments :).

Wow! Just revisited this podcast. I'm back in the Philippines. By the way, I will do a switch back from Java to C++ because the latter gives me more creative opportunities (and muscle) to do what I want. So my blog will sing a different tune this 2008 onwards. Sige, I'll be joining you guys sa kulitan and let's rock DevPinoy!

O Keith, I'm really back!
