With the current implementation of the framework, it really needs to have mod_rewrite enabled. Most of the implementation for user-friendly URLs requires mod_rewrite. So it might not be that easy to implement but let us see in future releases.

is it possible to run this without mod_rewrite? something like it will still use (search-unfriendly) URLs?

This would be the first Filipino OpenSource project that is supported by devPinoy! way to go jbeduya!

Nice concept! I love Ruby On Rails.. i think i got sold when i saw the popular 15-minute video on how Ruby on Rails work. I've seen the MonoRail project also and its totally awesome! and now, having something like this written for PHP would be tremendous for PHP hobbist and developers!
