When things get real hot...

I was surprised to find out that my cheapo notebook's CPU was running idle at 75 degrees Celsius! No, don't ask how it goes when the load gets high. Needless to say, the system kicks in auto-off when it reaches 95 degrees, and it sure did so when I tried to run Sisoft Sandra's CPU Arithmetic Benchmark. Good thing I found where to download Mobile Monitor, since its original web site has disappeared.

Anyway, another good thing is that even if the laptop's real cheap, the store I bought it from offers good support. They replaced the CPU and the heat sink/fan. Now it's running idle at 43 degrees.

I've been wandering blind, not knowing how hot my laptop is running. This MobileMeter utility is great. I'm surprised most desktop PCs have monitoring software but laptops, which you would expect to be more sensitive, don't.

probably because laptops have different chipsets. yep i also tried SiSoft Sandra and all the other utilities; they can't read any temperature sensor/reading in the machine. but MobileMonitor is able to get the CPU temperature, hard disk temperature and charge/discharge rate of the battery. cool.

if not for that utility, i wouldn't have any proof in getting a replacement from the store.

hey larry, your best bet would be to install mobilemonitor on your notebook, watch the temps, then attach that laptop cooler. you should see the temps decrease. if not, it's not really effective.
